[Voices that Bring Us Together ②] Interviews with members of Woven by Toyota, who inherit the history and desire of the Higashi-Fuji Plant and are working toward the future. How will Woven City connect to the future?

Toyota Woven City will be a place for co-creation, for inventors and residents who share our value and passion to invent something new "for others".

Toyota aspires to transform itself from an automobile company into a “Mobility” company. The goal is to expand the meaning of “movement” which has been to move people from point A to point B, such as by automobiles, to being able to also "move the heart" through free, efficient, practical, and enjoyable mobility of people, goods, information and energy.

Woven City features roads, plazas, stores, offices, and residences – resembling a real-life city where inventors and residents can co-create new ideas, products, and services. The various support provided by Woven City will accelerate the development of technology and service innovations that will redefine the future of mobility and lead to wellbeing for all.

Why are we building Woven City?

What kind of ”mobility” are we aiming for? What are the Purpose, Vision, and Mission of Woven City? Daisuke Toyoda, Head of Woven City Management shares his thoughts on why we are taking on this ambitious project and welcomes you to help us create the future fabric of life together.

People of Woven City

Woven City is a place where diverse residents who share the same passion of weaving a brighter future through mobility, can come together to contribute to creating a future of well-being for all. We are all focused on designing real-world solutions to common daily challenges through ongoing collaboration and real-time feedback.

Inventor

Inventors create technologies and services that can expand the possibilities of mobility.

Resident

Residents are welcome to actively test out and enjoy the new services and technologies that the inventors are creating, and be an essential part of the co-creation through real-time feedback and engagement.

There are no openings for having new residents at this point.
However, we will be able to announce on our website and other media as soon as we are ready to receive residents.

Visitors

The new services and technologies will also be open for visitors to Woven City, and can be enjoyed along with the experience to be part of the co-creation.

About Woven City

Woven City is a place for co-creation. The city brings together Toyota's expertise in hardware and software craftsmanship and kaizen to help stimulate innovation, while providing a unique environment to facilitate co-creation among inventors, residents and visitors to significantly accelerate the pace of invention and development.

Woven City Profile

A city to co-create and test products and services that expand the possibilities of mobility built on a former manufacturing site that used to accommodate the Toyota Motor East Japan, Higashi-Fuji plant. Construction on Phase 1 is scheduled for completion in 2024 with a soft launch expected in 2025.

The first area in Woven City where trials will begin.

Schedule: Construction of the first area is to be completed by the end of 2024, with a soft launch expected in 2025

: Woven City is a test course for mobility built to create the basis for the future fabric of life. People will live in the city while we invent, demonstrate, and repeatedly improve new systems, applications, and services that will amplify people’s abilities and enable them to thrive and live happy and fulfilling lives.

This inspirational project will be built on the former site of the Toyota Motor East Japan Higashi-Fuji Plant in Susono City, Shizuoka Prefecture. Together with surrounding communities, Toyota will demonstrate what “mobility” can do for people.

After thorough testing, the inventions from Woven City will be shared with the world.
: The purpose of Woven City is to realize well-being for all. Since individuals have different needs and preferences, our focus is on achieving well-being, not uniform happiness. To meet this goal, we will explore a variety of solutions to uplevel well-being for a wide variety of people.
: In 2018, Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) announced that it would transform itself from an “automobile company" into a true mobility company that creates well-being for all. Borne from the legacy cultivated by TMC, future mobility refers not only to the movement of people, things, and information from point A to point B but also the ability to emotionally “move” people's hearts. Woven City will redefine mobility beyond cars and transportation and expand its value to humanity.

The goal is to expand the definition of mobility from simply “moving things,” to adding ease and joy to daily life. Mobility will be seamlessly integrated into essential aspects of society such as healthcare, food and agriculture, energy, finance and education and be used in various ways that inspire daily happiness and amplify human potential.
: Woven City is driven by three primary concepts: “Human-Centered,” a “Living Laboratory,” and “Ever-Evolving.” Also, Woven City is a city that is a test course for mobility. As Toyota tests cars at their test courses, Woven City is a place where everyone can test their new services and products. This means as it strives to foster well-being for different kinds of people, the city will always be undergoing “kaizen” and never be completed.

: The city's infrastructure and design are currently under review, and the actual city may differ from the concept pictures. Please click on this link for up-to-date construction status.
: Woven City residents will be co-creators and we are looking to include inventors, the elderly, and families raising children. This will be a human-centered city and together we will solve social issues. Information about residency will be shared as soon as it is available.
: Woven City is a real-life proving ground for completely new ideas. We are open to hearing proposals from inventors, companies, and others who are interested in working together to create and test new services and systems to solve social issues.
